Sisli Gul Apartment Conservation Projects

In the Pervititch maps dated 1925, which is one of the first reference sources in research on the history of the building, it is seen that it has not been built yet. Since there is no source for the exact date of construction, it can be said that it was built after 1925, based on this and similar period examples. Between the years of 1923-1950, which is described as the period of restructuring after the proclamation of the Republic, the development activities that developed from the rural area to the city caused an increase in the urban population. In this period, population flow is seen from old and dense settlements of the city such as Fatih, Beyoğlu, Aksaray, Laleli to new settlements such as Şişli, Nişantaşı, Maçka. The most important building type seen in new construction activities are apartments. Apartments built in this period were built and rented out by a single person or family, just like the first apartments built in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Until the condominium law enacted in 1955, the apartments built in this way were called by the name of the person or family who had it built. It is understood from the balcony railings written “MO” (Matheos Olbright) bearing the initials of the name and surname of the person who built this building in the same way. The floor plan consists of two rooms facing the front facades, as is often seen in the buildings of this period, and the stair hall adjacent to the walls between them, and the service rooms accessed from a long corridor. There is a room in the front that is used as a living room and a dining room, and the rooms have two separate doors opening to the corridor and double-winged wooden doors opening to each other. At the back are two bedrooms, both of which open onto the balcony. There are kitchen, toilet and bathroom, which are entered from the long corridor between the living room and the bedrooms. The building has a simple façade decoration consisting of artificial stone mutuels, moldings and eaves moldings with floral motifs. The survey, restitution and restoration projects of the building were completed in 2022
